@BCB was it not Chaplin's Bar on Tues 1 May - searched this site but couldn't find it. Google search brings up several references including Steel Magnolia's blog dated 10 December 2010

If that quote is precise then the bit I've bolded is a bit strange - it's not saying untrue, a lie, or ridiculous, but simply exaggerated.

@sparkelehorse - I have found the following which details two call from a bar (Pacifico) in Vilamoura on the night of the 3rd/morning of 4th which seems to have been satisfactorily accounted for by the PJ:-

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/PJ_Report_English_Translation.pdf  (top of page 45) - (this report makes interesting reading in it's own right)
http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/AURELIO_GUERREIRO.htm

But Vilamoura is around an hours drive from Praia da Luz and I am sure I can remember details of pub much closer to the Smith sighting.  I will carry on trying to remember...sorry I just can't place it now, I could be mistaken, or maybe what I read was wrong.

Whichever, it would be very interesting to find out which pub is mentioned in the article, there is only a handful in that area.

The mention of the apartment near the Smith sighting (confusingly called VilaMura!) is in this link (page 3):-

Thanks @BCB interesting links about the property called Vilamura. First link just comes up with 404 not found but will try it on laptop later as iPad is sometimes temperamental.

It seems to me that the only thing that's holding the mcs back is Eddie and Keela ha ha, if they're unreliable, then why did he bring them up at this trial? Also, if this is what gm said, then he's quite switched on as not to lie under oath IMO

So, presumeably this lady who overheard (hearsay) the conversation is now an 'arguida' in Portugal, and a number one POI to the OG 'team', surely?

IF not, WHY not?

At that point in time we weren’t able to detect which apartment they entered, who lived there, because it’s also a bit complicated because you have to understand it’s a tourist area and often it’s not known who the apartment belongs to."

This could explain why they needed the drunk to escort home. Do the dates match? It probably doesn't matter, because confusion is good.

And as Kate said in her diary "We've all been there." Was she referring to Madeleine?
The date was 19th June. This date must be significant. GM flew back home to the UK on the 19th. During the flight he administers first aid to an 80 year old man, who has never been named. Upon landing he gets his wallet stolen. No record of theft reported to the police. Cancels credit cards.

20th June GM has a series of meetings in Leicester. He flies back to Portugal in the evening where he is met by Kate at the airport. Kate was not a named driver so either she drove without being covered, or someone else drove, though Kate does not mention who that might have been.
On the way back, 'just before they reach the apartment, they encounter a drunk on the road who 'recognises them'. GM walks him home. Umm a lot happened in those two days.

What might we consider to be the real purposes of the stories above?

Was something passed between the man on the plane and GM? Then maybe that 'something' was passed again by way of the lost wallet to a third party? This wallet return via friends.....incredible!

Was the drunken man story a cover just in case anyone had seen GM enter an apartment with a man who, 'knew them'?
I have no idea if this is relevant, but at the trial the other day Kate wrongly said they hired the car seven weeks after Madeleine's disappearance. Seven weeks afterwards was 21st June - that ties in rather well with your dates. Was it a Freudian slip?

Now stick a comma in, and watch the meaning of that sentence change...

"He gave several interviews but I do recall one in particular which was exaggerated. Where he said that Madeleine's body had been kept frozen and then taken inside the boot of the car we had rented, seven weeks later."

She didn't mean they RENTED THE CAR seven weeks later - she meant they PUT THE BODY IN THE CAR seven weeks later!

(Goncalo Amaral would not have been able to state with any certainty that it was seven weeks later that they moved the body, so surely she could not have been quoting him when she said that?)

(Just theorising - don't sue me!)
Putting it like that make so much sense. Well done. I think you have hit the nail with that.

Maybe, just maybe we have got a sequence of events that link- - going back to the UK-- man on plane-- lost wallet--cancel credit cards--drunk man(not drunk) who knows them-- going to an apartment near 5a--seven weeks later--events leading from storage to disposal?

Mr Amaral has never( to my knowledge) stated anything about the body being stored for seven weeks. Another own goal!
