The Judge has been questioning Mrs. McCann
Asked her when she first became aware of Mr. Amaral`s book - said she heard it was going to be published then read bits of it on the internet. Said it was hurtful that they were suffering from the abduction of the daughter then had this insult on top. Said Sean had asked them if they had hidden Maddie`s body in a freezer and then transported it in their hire car.
Martin Brunt said Mr. Amaral`s lawyer questioned Mrs. McCann and asked her about the support she had received, i.e. money and celebrities etc.
That`s all I can remember.

Why do we continue?
There is absolutely nothing to suggest that Madeleine has been harmed.
Madeleine is still missing and someone needs to be looking for her.
She is young and vulnerable and needs our help.
We love her dearly and miss her beyond words.
We still need your help in finding Madeleine. Thank you for continuing to stand by our side and most of all, for caring so much about Madeleine.
Kate McCann: My son asked me about claims that I 'hid' Maddie
KATE MCCANN has told a court of the heartbreaking moment that her son asked her about claims she was involved in her daughter Madeleine's disappearance.
By Tom Rawle/Published 8th July 2014
Mrs McCann said her son Sean, now 9, confronted her after he had heard the allegations made by former Portuguese police chief Goncalo Amaral on the radio.
Madeleine's parents are suing Mr Amaral for libel, after he claimed the couple were involved in their daughter’s disappearance.
While delivering statement at Lisbon’s Palace of Justice today, she told the court: "Sean asked me in October, he said ‘Mr Amaral said you hid Madeleine didn’t he?’
“I just said ‘He did. He said a lot of silly things.'
“I think that was on the radio on the way to school because they go on the school bus."
Sean was just two-years-old when his three-year-old sister went missing from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007.
He and his twin sister Amelie was said to be asleep when Madeleine was abducted.
Kate, 46, who was a doctor before her daughter's death, says what Mr Amaral has written could be "very, very damaging to a child".
She told the court that her and husband Gerry tried to control the information there other children were getting.
"We had to liaise with Sean and Amelie’s school in case any child or parent says anything to them about what is in Mr Amaral’s book and documentary," she said.
“They are at an age now where they are using computers in school and at home so we have had to carefully supervise.
“There are some things we can’t control for example when Sean said that comment.
“I believe what’s in Mr Amaral’s book and the documentary is very distressing to adults. To a child it could be very, very damaging.”
Mr Amaral was in charge of the investigation but was sacked after becoming fixated with the idea that Kate and Gerry were to do with her disappearance.
He later wrote a book, The Truth of the Lie, in which he makes a series of allegations about the couple.
Kate and Gerry were considered people of interest in the investigation in September 2007 but were later cleared of any involvement.
When asked by the judge how the book made her and Gerry feel, Kate replied: “I was devastated. It made me feel quite desperate because of the injustice I felt towards my daughter and our family as a whole.
“It was very painful to read and I felt sad for Madeleine. I also felt anxious and fearful because of the damage I felt it was doing in Portugal.
Mr Amaral insists that Madeleine is dead. He also essentially accused myself and my husband of being somehow involved in this, of faking an abduction.
“Throughout the book he consistently smears myself and my husband."
Kate said a TV documentary he appeared in was “even worse than the book".
She added: “That intensified the pain because of the injustice and the anxiety about the damage this could cause to the search.
“We were working so hard trying to do everything in our power to try to find Madeleine which was hard enough in itself."
In one interview, she said Amaral even accused the couple of storing Madeleine’s body in a freezer – then of disposing it weeks later.
She admitted that she felt "defeated" once the book was released and the fingers were being pointed at her and her husband.
"There were times when the pain was overwhelming but I believe after the book things got worse," she added.
Then Gerry was asked how he felt when the book was released
Gerry, 45, also a doctor, told the court: “The book itself is shocking. It’s an affront to my wife, my family and all the people who believe in us.
“When reading the book the hardest emotion is anguish, despair and of course anger that someone who was so close to the investigation…states that she is unequivocally dead.
“The documentary claims Madeleine is dead, there was no abduction and that myself and my wife and our friends are liars and we would be so cold and ruthless as to hide our daughter’s body rather than try to help her should something have happened.”
He said many Portuguese did not believe they were innocent which was spurred on by Mr Amaral's book.
The court was adjourned until a later date when closing speeches will be heard.
The two previously accused the disgraced detective Mr Amaral of making a "blatant and cynical" attempt to stall the case, after he sacked his legal team of the morning they were due to make statements.
If successful in the case, Mr and Mrs McCann are expected to make around £1 million in damages.
Last week, Scotland Yard detective began interviewing suspects linked to the case.
Police are thought to have questioned three workers from the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz who are linked to burglaries close to the resort.
The suspects are thought to have broken into homes just weeks before Maddie went missing
Her parents said they are pleased with the pace of the current investigation.
They said: “It is gratifying to know a substantial amount of work is taking place with the co-operation of British and Portuguese authorities.”
British police searched areas of marsh and scrubland last month but found no new evidence.
A spokesperson for Scotland Yard confirmed: "There is still a substantial amount of work yet to be completed in the coming weeks and months."

@scrants wrote:Well I thought I'd seen it all from the McCanns, but dear me, the figure Kate cast in front of the judge today was even more pitiful than that she cuts on Lorraine Kelly's sofa each year. What was most striking though was the sheer lack of thought behind each and every answer she gave. Asked by the judge whether she had ever suffered from depression, the answer she gave was no, but then went on to waffle on about how depression can come in many forms, I'm guessing a lack of cash in her rear pocket couldn't be diagnosed officially as depression, much to her dismay. Kate was quiet in her responses but flashed the forlorn look over to the clearly unimpressed judge.candyfloss wrote:candyfloss wrote:LizzyF

Can someone please let us know the gist of this. ^^^^^
As a witness for the prosecution goes she was hardly man of the match. Asked about the how the book had affected Sean and Amelie, Kate mentioned the fact that child psychologist, Dave Trickey, had advised them to answer any questions the children might have. Asked if either of the twins had queried anything, Kate stated that Sean had asked if they killed Madeleine, when given the answer she said he just moved on, followed by her trademark curl of the lips. Wow! Just like Kate and Gerry did when Madeleine asked why they didn't come when her and Sean were crying 7 years ago. Kate also mentioned the fact that the McCanns have an internet media monitoring unit. No surprises there hotlips, though nice of you to confirm it to those who have been tormented by your "friends" for speaking the truth about your heinous past.
As you would expect both Kate and Gerry were evasive of the truth, for instance when asked about the effects of the book, Kate mentioned that social media and internet groups had followed and believed Goncalo Amaral's book. What Kate wasn't expecting was the follow up question, were these groups around prior to the book, or after......................struggling to find words Kate was forced to admit that the groups were around prior to the book, although in her own words the book "added fuel to the fire" heaven forfend!! Before Kate left her position, and could finally head off to being her stony faced self again, the judge asked a big question, how did the effect of the book compare to losing your daughter. This is a vitally important question, remember the official line from the McCanns at the start of the proceeding was that it was far worse. Now faced with the question, Kate changed the official line to a new improved line "it compounded the pain" Following the questions Kate stood up moved to the back of the court moved her way down the pew to were I was sat, had a change of heart turned and bailed out the back door. At that point it was time for a break.
After a short interval we went upstairs to the courtroom once again, this time it was the turn of Gerry. As we know Gerry likes to act the big man, full of bravado and self importance, and today was no different. He talked confidently, he talked clearly, and he lied. He was asked much the same questions as Kate was, only his answers were slightly different. Yes he was more forceful and assured with his responses, but as far as substance and argument of point goes he was as wishy washy as his partner in crime. Gerry too was asked if the groups on the internet were around before Amaral's book, he replied he wasn't sure. I almost did a real life lol! We're talking about a man who is a control freak to a the point of obsession. Of course old flat head knew the groups were around before the book, just like the official PJ files were around before the book. The very same police files the book was based on.
Gerry mentioned that Sean had asked why Mr Amaral had said that they had hidden Madeleine's body............I bet the answer they gave wasn't "well your mummy's clothes were covered in the scent of a human corpse, we lied through our teeth about the factors that led to Madeleine's disappearance, and set about a life of lie upon lie, hidden truth upon hidden truth and slanderous accusations of our own. The judge asked Gerry what impact Goncalo's book had had on the perception of public opinion as to the involvement of the McCanns with regards to Madeleine's disappearance, you couldn't make Gerry's response up. He , full of smarm and smugness, declared that he couldn't be sure as he didn't know what the public opinion was before the book. He was also asked how losing his daughter compared pain wise to the damage the book did. His response? A diversion to say the least, when he stated that the two things happened at different times, and therefore couldn't be compared. Digging more holes than Scotland Yard there Gerry me old fruit! This show isn't over yet though, Gerry was asked if he ever had a loss of appetite or suffered insomnia due to the contents of the book, yes came the reply "but it wasn't permanent"
At the end of Gerry's time in the hot seat, and in his infinite arrogance, Gerry set about an attempt to discuss his favourite subject the dogs. This part of the proceedings was an absolute wonderment to watch. Gerry claimed that the dogs didn't find any blood, then despite the judge telling him to be quiet he carried on, desperately trying to put across his lie. It was at this point the judge , with a wry smile waved a backhand at Gerry and told him to be quiet, interrupted his every utterance, before asking him if he was a specialist on the dogs, and then reminding Gerry that he wasn't here to state things he was here to answer her questions in her court..... IT'S A BULLSEYE!!!
Today belonged solely to Goncalo Amaral, who entered the court apprehensive, and left full of life and confidence. The final day was due to be on Thursday, but the McCanns, without thought for Goncalo, and whether he would have to organise child minders caused yet another postponement, due to them requesting Goncalo's financial records as well as those of the producer of the documentary, the publishers of the book and TVI, the tv station that broadcast the documentary, but it isn't about the money hey? Yeah right.

Judge Maria Emília de Melo e Castro presiding the trial
Dr. Miguel Rodrigues for Gonçalo Amaral, the book author
Dr. Fátima de Oliveira Esteves for Guerra e Paz, the book publishers of ‘Maddie, A Verdade da Mentira’
Dr Miguel Coroadinha for TVI, the Portuguese TV channel that broadcast the documentary ‘Maddie, What lies beneath the Truth’
Dr. Henrique Costa Pinto for Valentim de Carvalho Filmes who produced the documentary and DVD copies with the same documentary that were never sold
Dr. Isabel Duarte for the McCann couple and their children, the claimants
What follows is the recount of what happened yesterday at court, to the best of my knowledge and short handwritten notes.
The Judge at beginning of hearing sessions spoke and instructed the scribe about the request that had been made by Gonçalo Amaral’s previous lawyer so the defendant could be heard in court. That request was opposed by the McCann couple’s lawyer, Isabel Duarte, and had been previously denied by the Judge in 2013.
The McCann couple, who had also requested to be heard in court, saw their application being refused as well. Yet they pleaded against that decision to the Appeals court and their request was granted, therefore they were now authorized to be heard in court, which is what takes place after this “introductory” instruction by the lady Judge, Maria Emília de Melo e Castro.
The Judge then added that since Gonçalo Amaral’s former lawyer did not oppose to the ruling - which refused his request to be heard - a new appeal opposing the ruling could no longer be accepted, and therefore that decision had now become final.
The Judge continues instructing the scribe and states that the authors of the lawsuit - the McCann couple - have requested the court to solicit an official application to ATA [Autoridade Tributária Aduaneira] i.e. the Portuguese equivalent to the IRS, in order to obtain confidential fiscal information.
The Judge Maria Emília de Melo e Castro authorized and ordered for the dispatch to be prepared “since it is essential to know, within the scope of the case being analysed here at the court, what are the eventual earnings” of the defendant Gonçalo Amaral regarding the sales of the book ‘Maddie, A Verdade da Mentira’.
The Judge then added that the court dismissed the need to observe the confidentiality of that fiscal information in view of the fact that “the acquirement of that evidence” is crucial and ruled that the other defendant parties have 10 days to oppose the McCann’s lawyer request. That meant that the hearing session of yesterday's afternoon, where Isabel Duarte was supposed to make her final allegations for a period of three hours was adjourned sine die [without a definite date scheduled] and so was the hearing session of the 10th of July. Due to the judicial holidays it's very likely that the trial will only continue in or after September.
Earlier on this year, the only defendant party opposing the McCann’s fiscal request was the lawyer for the Guerra e Paz book publishers who argued that this new application would cause an unnecessary lengthening of the trial.
Follows Kate Healy and Gerry McCann declarations to court in strict compliance to Portuguese law. A declaration is a series of answers to questions put by the Judge, and of questions from the accusation or/and defendant lawyers.
The couple decided to ask to make a further statement at the end of each declaration, these statements will not be considered and will have no reflection on the trial outcome even though they were recorded by the scribe.
I wonder it they knew that before they spoke ?
All Gerry has now done is put the stuff about the dogs in the public domain - once again - but it has NO BEARING on the outcome of the trial. Which we knew anyway. The trial is about whether the book is defamatory, not how they feel about it.
And the school bus stuff is capable of being checked.
What idiot is advising these idiots ?

In scenes reminiscent of an episode from Perry Mason, Gerry McCann yesterday attempted to persuade a libel trial that he was an expert in blood detection dogs.
The intervention by Judge Maria Emília de Melo e Castro came following the reading of a personal statement to the court by Gerry McCann wherein he attempted to interject the subject of the dog alerts. Thus began one of the most bizarre episodes of the trial to date and a wonderment to watch.
Gerry McCann claimed that the dogs hadn't found any blood and despite the judge telling him to be quiet he carried on regardless, desperately trying to put across his point of view. As McCann continued, the Judge was having none of it however, and with a wry smile waved a backhand at the witness and told him to be quiet. She thereafter interrupted his every utterance, before asking him if he was a specialist on the dogs and finally reminding him that he was not there to state opinion, rather he was there at her invitation to answer her questions in her court...
Good Judge !
